Apollo Club Harlem

On Monday evening, I opened my closet and looked for clothing that could be considered jazz age attire. I settled on a straight dress, tights, and my beloved Camper Kim shoes. I accessorized with a long thin gold necklace, a black knit cap and red lipstick. Then I strutted to the A train and headed to the opening evening of Apollo Club Harlem. I didn't quite look like the decked out women in old black and white photos I'd seen on the net. But I was excited and anxious to relive a time when jazz music represented popular music in America.

Les Misérables Parodies

I haven't seen the film Les Misérables yet. After a theater friend of mine was lukewarm on it, I figured that I would wait for the DVD. Better yet, I might just wait for the new stage version which is expected to come to Broadway in March 2014 according to the NYT. In the meantime, I'll watch the Les Miz parodies on youtube. Here are my new top two favorites.

Raising Daughters - Advice From The Heiress' Dr. Austin Sloper

1. Expect everything.
2. ...when you are married, you must have a lot of children. This way you won't put all your hopes on one. Give yourself more than a single chance.
3. ...if she marries a man I don't approve, ... leave [her inheritance) to the Clinic.

Quote from British Playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah

Theater works at its best when it succeeds at being a catalyst for debate - a conversation starter not just within the four walls of the playhouse but in the car on the way home, the next day at work and, if it's really good, in the weeks and months to follow.

Quote from NYP Theater Critic Elisabeth Vincentelli

From Elisabeth Vincentelli's theater review of Bethany:
Theater likes to pat itself on the back for its social relevance and high-minded ideals, but it’s actually paid little attention to the recession and its impact on the poor.
